When to use AAA alkaline batteries?
If you don’t have many devices that take AAA batteries and haven’t purchased AAA batteries for some time, stay with AAA alkaline batteries. AAA alkaline batteries can be purchased in bulk for a low price. Alkaline batteries are reliable and have a shelf life of 7 to 10 years. Alkaline batteries are one good solution for emergency preparedness kits due to the long shelf life.

AAA alkaline batteries are not designed for high drain devices. If you use a lot of AAA Alkaline batteries we suggest you purchase AAA NiMH low discharge rechargeable batteries. Standard NiMH batteries will last one and a half to two times as long as alkaline per charge.
AAA lithium batteries are a good choice if you need batteries to last for years on the shelf, and they work well in high temperatures. Lithium batteries are not rechargeable and last 7 times longer than alkaline batteries. AAA Lithium batteries have a 10 year minimum shelf life. Lithium batteries are the perfect solution for emergency preparedness kits due to the long shelf life. Lithium batteries are more expensive than alkaline but last longer and perform better in high draining devices.

When to use AAA low discharge NiMH rechargeable batteries?
A good rule of thumb to use when deciding on low discharge batteries is how often you use the device or how quickly it drains batteries. If you use your camera more than once a week, go for the higher milliamp standard NiMH, but if you use your camera like most of us – occasionally but you need the batteries to work when you need them, low discharge are the way to go. They have a lower milliamp but will always be ready when you are. Many folks find that it is good to have the higher milliamp standard NiMH for vacation and special event use with a set of low discharge NiMH for use the rest of the time.

Low discharge (also known as ready to use or precharged) batteries are a better solution for general purpose devices that are low drain devices. Low discharge batteries also have better shelf life than regular NiMH rechargeable batteries. They are the perfect replacement for alkaline batteries and with more than a thousand charge cycles possible, they are far better for the environment. NiMH batteries do not have memory effect.

When to use regular AAA NiMH batteries?
If you use your device a lot over a short period of time or have high drain devices, NiMH batteries are the best solution. Higher capacity mAh battery allows longer run time for your devices. NiMH regular batteries have a short shelf life and lose on average 40% of their charge within a month. For best performance and longest life, standard NiMH batteries should be charged at least every sixty days (preferably every thirty days) whether they are being used or not. NiMH batteries do not have memory effect.
